Here are the steps you must go through to begin an adoption of a Haitian orphan.
- Register with Hope For Families Haiti Adoption Program. Your completed registration information and International Registration Fee of $2,800 (twenty eight hundred dollars) is required in order to take position in the “adoption cue” as a family in process for adoption. Essentially we must operate on a first come - first serve basis. Your registration fee covers the initial international work, and initial dossier creation which we will facilitate for you with our Haitian adoption director.
- Secondly, you must have an international home study completed through a qualified adoption agency ASAP. If you live in Florida, Hope For Families will provide you with this service for approximately $1,400. If you live outside of Florida - we can refer you to a qualified agency outside of Florida although those agencies may charge a fee higher than our agency. Click here to get detailed information about what is required in a home study.
- As part of our Haitian Adoption program, we will accept an international home study properly completed by another qualified agency. Otherwise, we will be happy to complete the homestudy for you or refer you to an outside agency. Once we have received the required completed adoption forms, required registration fee and completed home study, we will work with the adoptive family to match you with an orphan and facilitate the full process of an international adoption from Haiti.
In the meantime, we will direct you to our registration page by clicking here, and then ask you to download the adoption registration forms by going to our adoption forms page. Please complete the forms and send them in with your registration fee. Again, we are operating on a first come, first serve policy as does the US Immigration Office and Haitian Courts. So the sooner you complete the registration process, the sooner your family can be enriched with a wonderful orphan child or children who need a loving home.
May God Bless You on Your Adoption Journey!

FOR PARENTS ADOPTING FROM HAITI
Overview
Haiti has a long history of underdevelopment and political instability. Haiti is beset by widespread poverty, economic decline, unemployment, poor governance, and severe violence.
Haiti currently has a population of about 8 million people, and 1 million of those inhabitants are abandoned or orphaned children.
Haiti is a small island (it actually shares an island with the Dominican Republic) and with a surface area of just 27,797 square kilometers (km2), Haiti is second only to Barbados as the most densely populated country (306 people per km2) in the Americas.
Dear adoptive parents, please be aware that Hope For Families has partnered with a specific Christian Orphanage organization that is located throughout the island nation of Haiti. Hope For Families Adoption and Counseling LLC is also a Christian based agency, and we share in the foundational Christian beliefs, morals, and standards of behavior that model the teachings and life of Christ.
To this end, the Christian Orphanage that we are working with, has placed a specific requirement that the adoptive parents of these Haitian children be actively committed to Christ in their faith and life, and that they be regular attendees of a local church family. This requirement is only applicable to children coming from Haiti through our Haitian adoption program. Please see the Haitian Adoption Home Study Checklist and see items 11 and 12 which refer to this requirement.
Please understand that this is respectful of the ministry that this Christian Orphanage provides within Haiti. This requirement only applies to children adopted under the Haiti Adoption program with Hope For Families Adoption and Counseling LLC
These Haitian children are in desperate need of adoption and need a stable, Christian family in which to grow up and develop. The founder of this orphanage project is a Christian and has given the last 17+ years of their life to saving and providing refuge for the children of Haiti that have no family. The orphanage founder has endured great financial hardship in order to provide a safe and healthy environment for these children. We have been blessed to meet the founder and work together to facilitate these wonderful adoptions.
Below, we have listed some informative facts about the country of Haiti and the basic requirements to adopt a child within this program.
- Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere
- 50% of all Haitian households live in extreme poverty using the U.S. standard of a $1 per day
- Extremely poor households have about twice as many children as do the nonpoor.
- The country’s per capita GDP, has fallen by about 50 percent to $332 in the last two decades
- Most of the approximately 3.9 million who are extremely poor live in rural areas.
- About 4 in every 10 adults cannot read and write.
- More than 80% do not have access to clean drinking water.
- In rural areas only 10 percent of the inhabitants have electricity and just 3 percent have a telephone.
- The unemployment rate is highest in urban areas and runs close to 49%
- As many as 58 percent of residents in the metropolitan area feel unsafe “often or most of the time” in their own home.
- Haiti has one of the world’s weakest police forces. There are 63 police officers per 100,000 people, less than a quarter of the regional average of 283 per 100,000 and only a third of the average for sub-Saharan African countries.
Proceeds to the Haitian orphanage through this program will help to secure a safe and healthy refuge for the future orphans in Haiti.
Q:|How do I adopt a child?
A:|Once you have decided to adopt, one of the first steps will be to complete a family profile through Hope For Families Adoption agency who will guide you through the process.
Q:|What is the role of the orphanage - are you an adoption agency?
A:| We are not an adoption agency. We work through Hope For Families Adoption agency in the adoptions, in turn, help to provide financial support for and to raise awareness of the orphan problem in Haiti.
Q:|Can we adopt more than one child at a time? Does it cost less?
A:|Upon approval, you may adopt more than one child at a time. There are several fees that are not duplicated, including the home study fee, your passport and visa fees, and travel and lodging costs. Certain costs per child, such as program in-country fees, medical examinations, etc, may be additional.

Q:|Do you have sibling groups?
A:|We do have sibling groups. As much as possible we try to keep sibling groups together.
Q:|How long does it take to adopt a child from Haiti?
A:|The length of a wait for a child from Haiti is usually between 18-24 months from the time the dossier is sent to Haiti. It is difficult to predict the exact length of each stage of the legal process. The length of time necessary for legal processing in Haiti varies due to bureaucratic procedures, changes in laws, political stability, etc.
Q:|What are the ages of the children that are cared for at the orphanage?
A:|While we do care for children over the age of three, we focus primarily on infants (newborns to 2 year olds) for the following reasons:
They are the most underserved group because they have the highest mortality rate among orphaned children. In additon, many orphanages cannot afford the high costs for formula, diapers, and skilled caregivers And with our high caregiver to child ration we are able to give them the intensive time needed for necessary attachment skills, eliminating cases of attachment disorder.
Q:|What is the medical history of the children at the orphanage - and will we have access to this information?
A:|Each child that comes to the orphanage for adoption is screened for major illnesses through examination by a Haitian Pediatrician and also through lab tests. The children are also given psychological exams that pinpoint any possible developmentally delayed areas that the child may have.
Each child is tested for: HIV, Sickle Cell Anemia, Hepatitis B, VDRL (Syphilis), and is given a Complete Blood Count (CBC).

Q:|How much does it cost to adopt?
A:|Fees vary by country program (travel costs, in-country fees, document processing).
Q:|Do we need to travel out of country to pick up our child after all paperwork is processed?
A:|Except for rare occasions, you will need to travel to Haiti to pick up your child. Families should plan on spending five to six days in Haiti for an appropriate transition time. This allows the child to get comfortable with his/her new family in a setting that is familiar to him/her.
Q:|What can I expect in terms of development for my adopted child?
A:|Haitian babies are often developmentally delayed when compared with North American babies of the same age. Much of this is cultural and most of the time it is reversed soon after arriving in North America. Many infants are discouraged from standing or crawling by their mothers due to poor living conditions. Most Haitian children crawl between 9 and 12 months and walk between 13 to 17 months. After a baby arrives in their adoptive homes, they start advancing quickly and usually have caught up with their North American playmates within 6 months.
Q:|Do you allow independent adoptions or must I choose an adoption agency?
A:|In the majority of cases we will encourage you to work through an adoption agency who can guide you through the steps of the very detailed and sometimes complicated international adoption process. In this case, Hope for Families is our direct United States agency which will facilitate our adoptions.

The orphanage was accredited by the Haitian government in 1996 to assist with adoption and child welfare work. Since then, the orphanage has placed over 50 children with loving families, provided a fresh drinking water program to the local villagers and recently started a school for the children of the village. Right now, over 340 children attend the mountain village schools that provide one meal per day for each student. In 2009, so far this year they have completed 15 adoptions to families in the U.S. Now, with the help of their exclusive United States agency partner, Hope For Families Adoption services, they hope to adopt over 100 children into the United States in 2010.
The orphanage has one of the highest caregiver to child ratios you will find. They currently employ a staff of 35 and typically have between 30-40 children in the orphanage. They also employ two fulltime nurses, an English speaking preschool teacher, and a pediatrician who comes weekly to make checkups on all the children, and offer the services of a physical therapist. In addition they do thorough medical screening and lab tests on all children prior to placing them in the Crèche. HIV is prevalant in Haiti and they test all children to make certain they have not contracted HIV, VDRL, Sickle Cell, or TB, as well as providing you with a number of other lab and blood work ups on the children at the adoption center.
Once you have made the decision to build your family through adoption, you will be eager to get started. Learning about your options, working with Hope For Families Adoption services and beginning your home study and document collection process are all important steps towards your goal of bringing your child home.
